News of the Pews
February 2012
Congratulations, Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church! Our Certificate of Occupancy has been granted and your new building expansion is ready to be used for God’s mission!
The ceremonial words and formal celebrations will take place in the near future; for now, we can all give thanks to God for the hard work, dedication, and vision of many of our church members, past and present. It is especially appropriate to acknowledge our Design & Construction Committee, whose moderators have been active and present, day and night, throughout the course of this project. But where would we be without the many who headed up the Capital Campaign and its various committees and subcommittees? And how far from our goals would we be if not for the Interior Design & Furnishings Committee? We’d still be wondering how the whole thing would ever get off the ground if not for the leaders who comprised the Building Expansion Committee. Our contractor had already joined our church before he gave us a great bid, and has worked tirelessly. And many other individuals have been crucial to this moment. How about everyone who has faithfully contributed prayers, money, energy, expertise, and time, just for starters?
Work remains to be done, but it is a joyful work, as we move furnishings into the new space. The Soup Supper on January 25 will be recorded as the first event to take place in the new fellowship hall, and Sunday School classes and other programs will be moving in over the next few weeks. Though our worship space is not significantly changed, we will see new patterns as the minister greets worshipers at the new door leading to the new foyer and into the new fellowship hall. And other patterns will gradually become part of our daily church life. And we are proud to announce that from now on, you may park in our lovely, new back parking area, and enter the building through the first doors you come to!
Meanwhile, this is a jam-packed, expanded issue of the N.O.P. that includes lots of dates for your 2012 calendar, and a lot of info about many various ministries, programs and opportunities. Please read carefully so as not to miss anything that might be just right for you.
On we go! “Not to us, O God, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness” (Psalm 115:1).
Mother, Father, Parent God,
We are ‘almost’ moved in. The walls are up, the roof is on, the carpet is laid, the windows let in the light of the sun. Once we are “certified”, the furniture comes next, and then we can sit down in this place dedicated to “providing an atmosphere that encourages the spiritual development of its members through teaching God’s word, through opportunities for stewardship and fellowship, and by reaching out to our members and community.” We will gather in these spaces to listen, to learn, to love, and to exercise our responsibilities as the priesthood of all believers. May we nurture each other as we see Your face in each other’s faces, and may we take what we have learned about You and about ourselves out into the world. Yes, we are loved, and yes, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Thanks to the generosity of the CBPC congregation, we were able to supply five care packages to the Marine Corps 2/2 BLT on their ten month deployment, which began March 2011. Lt. Col Gordon Miller has let me know how much these packages meant to the 1,000 young Marines out of Camp Lejeune. Thank you for your prayers for these men and your generous gifts for the care packages. Hopefully by the time you read this, these men will be reunited with their families. —Virginia Parman

With more voices, the more this will be a success, and our hope is to sing in worship soon after these practices. (Children are needed for both practices.)
Parents, thank you for encouraging your children in Christian education activities such as this!
!
A great MISSION to help children who suffer from poverty, neglect, abuse, and AIDS.
The Naomi Ruth Circle is sponsoring a mission project for the Amani Children’s Foundation. Amani is the Swahili word for peace. The Amani Children’s Foundation is a special organization that provides care for infants orphaned by AIDS and poverty in Kenya. The challenge of orphaned children in Africa is one of unprecedented proportion: 15 million orphans are vulnerable to neglect, abuse, and to eventually getting AIDS themselves.
Cherry Hershey has worked with this mission project previously and will be helping guide our church in this special mission opportunity. She and the Naomi Ruth Circle are sponsoring two “Amani” jewelry making days: February 10 and February 21, 9:00 A.M. -7:00 P.M. Any interested adults, youth or older children can come when you can at any time on those days to help make beautiful jewelry, which will be sold to benefit these orphanages. ( 100% of all donations will go directly to Kenya to care for the babies.) Even the beads are a Fair Trade item as well, adding to this great project of love and support. You can see a story of hope about one of these orphanages from a December 2011 CNBC news article at amanichildren.org.
Come learn more, and be part of this fun and meaningful mission project!
Middle School Retreat: "God Hears a Who" is the topic of the presbytery Middle School Retreat, March 10-11 at Camp Kirkwood, and it looks to be a great event for this age group. Middle Schoolers who are interested in attending, please speak with one of our Youth leaders or Vivian Hare.
Vacation Bible School week will be June 10-15 (more info to come about specific dates). Many volunteers will be needed to help make this community event happen. A VBS Leadership meeting of all volunteers who are willing to help will be held Sunday, March 18, 5:00 P.M. Please volunteer!
The Choir Lenten workshop retreat will be February 25, 8:30-1:00 P.M.

A Sacraments Education Class for Kindergarten age through 5th graders will take place March 17, 9:00-12:00. This class is for parents and children. If your child has not yet participated, please make plans to involve them in this important class for learning about the two sacraments we observe as Presbyterians, Baptism and Communion. (Children do not need to have been baptized to participate.)
Learning activities will include art, trips to the sanctuary, question/answer time, games, and a portion of our time will include making communion bread together. Please let DCE Vivian Hare know by Feb. 12 if you and your child plan to attend.
CENTERPOINT
Last month I wrote about the popular phrase, “it is what it is.” Clients often seem to use the saying to express a feeling of passive hopelessness. The result is a mind trap of negativity.
I suggest adding three words, “it is what it is, while it is.” Those three words could have beneficial effects for a range of difficulties from everyday stress to anxiety and depression. Here’s how… Negative thoughts induce negative feelings that become a mind trap. The thoughts are not facts, but the feelings are real. Telling yourself “it is what it is, while it is” pushes you back into the present moment and reminds you that the feelings are not forever.
Saying, “it is what it is, while it is” gives you enough distance that you can choose a different response. As your mind gets triggered into the “what if” game in which you look at upcoming scenarios as catastrophes, saying “it is what it is, while it is” helps you realize your mind is playing the negativity game. You can begin to recognize that the anxiety has a life of its own, and that, like everything else, it comes and goes.
Saying “it is what it is, while it is,” is not a magical cure-all. You will need to integrate it into other helpful actions such as developing satisfying, nourishing activities, and finding supportive friends. Counseling is a way to reach deeper self-understanding and acceptance.
