A Word on Our Worship

A word from the Pastor on our worship services, for those considering a visit to Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church:

Worship services in our church are open to everyone--of our faith, of any faith, of no faith. It is our sincere hope that you will find in our Presbyterian worship something that will give you strength for living your life and serving the world in a positive way, strength which comes from our firm belief that Jesus Christ is the full earthly expression of the Creator God, and it is an expression of the most profound love. Our worship services are rooted in the Reformed ideal that the churches of the New Testament showed a pure way of being the Church together.

Our worship is dignified but personal, engaged with today but not typically of the "contemporary" movement in worship. We are Democrats, Republicans and independents; we are conservatives and liberals of every stripe; some dress formally for worship, some dress casually. We warmly invite you to join us for any of our regular or occasional worship services. Browse our website or give us a call if you have any questions!

CBPC seeks to be an access-friendly church for everyone:

  • Large-print bulletins are available each Sunday; ask an usher as you enter the sanctuary.
  • Individualized devices for the hearing-impaired are available for use in worship; ask an usher or see Bill Harris or Scott Woodard.
  • Wheelchair access is available via sidewalks on the sides and back of the building, with a ramp leading up to the front door of the office building.
  • A wheelchair is available on the premises if needed.
  • We try to print all documents in easily readable fonts. Please let us know if, and how, this can be improved for you!
  • A nursery is available during worship each Sunday, and by prior request for other services.
  • A rocking chair is also placed in a discrete corner of the sanctuary, for those who would like to remain in the sanctuary with baby.

Do you have a musical gift you would like to share in worship or other church programs? Please speak with the Pastor or the Director of Music. Strings of the guitar or violin families, brass, percussion, piano, organ, voice--we may have a place for your talent in our church.

Lent

Lent is the season of preparation for Easter. During Lent, it is appropriate for all Christians to enter into a season of personal discipline, in order to focus one’s whole life on the sacrifice Jesus made for us, and the meaning of following him.

Traditional practices include “giving something up for Lent,” as a means of self-denial of a luxury that one normally can afford oneself. This kind of spiritual fasting helps some people to stay focused and grateful for the blessings we are able to enjoy regularly. Some commit to a certain mission or ministry during Lent—serving a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, doing an altruistic good deed for someone each day, etc. Lent takes place over the 40 days leading to Easter (Sundays are not counted in the 40). It is the most solemn time of the year for Christians.

You may see people wearing purple to church events. Purple is the liturgical color of the season, signifying the majesty of Christ as well as the period of mourning. Together those meanings draw us closer to a sense of, as Frederick Buechner has said, "both what we are becoming, and what we are failing to become." Such introspection is the purpose of the spiritual discipline of this season.

Our Lenten services this year include:

Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, 7:00 P.M.
Stations of the Cross, March 21, beginning with a church supper at 5:00 P.M.
Maundy Thursday, April 1, 7:00 P.M.
Good Friday, April 2, 12:15 P.M.

NOTE FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH: If you will be out of town during Holy Week--which again in 2010 coincides with Spring Break in the public schools--be sure to seek out Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services wherever you are.

On Sunday afternoon, March 21, the Middle School and Sr. High youth groups will present a service based on the Stations of the Cross, which in our case will be more properly titled "Scenes of the Cross." An ensemble will lead congregational singing for the service.

An informal church dinner (covered dish), hosted by the Fellowship & Hospitality Committee, will be held at 5:00 P.M. Sunday, March 21, followed by the Scenes of the Cross in the sanctuary. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

A Service for Wholeness

A Service for Wholeness will be held in the sanctuary Thursday evening, March 11, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. Those who attend these services always report that it is a powerful experience. Holy Communion is celebrated, and those who wish it will receive the traditional prayer practices of laying on of hands and anointing with oil.

Our aim is to come to God in prayer for the needs and concerns that are causing us or our loved ones to be less than whole. Everyone is welcome to come and participate.

Call 458-5417 or e-mail haregrog@bellsouth.net for more information about any of our worship events!
