CBPC celebrates communion at least 12 times a year (even more if one counts the 8:30 and 11:00 services separately), on Sunday mornings and in special services. Occasionally we serve communion by distribution; i.e., first the bread is passed through the congregation on trays, and then the (unfermented) wine is passed on trays containing separate, thimble-size cups.
More commonly in recent years, we have celebrated in a style called "intinction," in which worshipers come forward, receive bread from the pastor in front of the communion table, and dip it in the chalice (cup) held by an elder beside the table.
A couple more words on our communion practice:
We never use alcohol, in respect to members who struggle with personal issues, remembering the words of I Corinthians 8 warning churches against inadvertently providing "a stumbling block to the weak."
We have two volunteers who faithfully prepare both the elements and the table: Pam Navarra and Jo Ivester can be thanked for every single communion service that happens: they come early--sometimes the night before or early in the morning--and prepare grape juice, bread, cloths for the table, plates and chalices - in short, all the preparations for the communion service that you can imagine, including putting things away and cleaning the dishes and cloths afterwards. When taking communion, we can be grateful to God for Jo and Pam's service to the body of Christ.
