Session Committee Descriptions
BUDGET & FINANCE COMMITTEE (& STEWARDSHIP SUBCOMMITTEE)
Oversight of all stewardship, budget, and financial matters –
Promoting stewardship throughout the year, encouraging the grace of liberality among church members, and promoting stewardship giving to the church’s mission.
Monitoring the financial situation of the church, reporting monthly to the Session concerning income and expenses, and any budget and financial matters needing attention.
Planning and directing the Stewardship program, selecting and leading the Fall Stewardship emphasis.
Preparing the annual proposed budget, recommending it to the Session for approval.
Collecting offerings and gifts, distributing funds in accord with approved budget.
Supervising policies and practices of accountability, using available bookkeeping programs.
Providing for quarterly, confidential statements to church members of contributions and gifts.
BUILDINGS & GROUNDS COMMITTEE
Oversight and maintenance of all church properties –
Frequent examination of church building and grounds to ascertain any deteriorating conditions or needs for repairs
Provide and supervise timely maintenance of all property, keeping all church property in good repair
Supervise cleaning of the church and grounds maintenance
Organize church workdays
Review insurance policies on church
Report to the Session any matters needing their attention
Work with Budget & Finance Committee in developing maintenance & depreciation schedule
Prepare and present budget requests to the Budget & Finance Committee
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Oversight of all congregational educational programs and activities [including:]
Supervision of the Church School
Evaluation and recommendation of curriculum
Recruitment, training, and support of teachers
Vacation Bible School
Fellowship Programs for children and youth
Bible studies
Special educational events
Report to Session
Prepare and present budget requests to the Budget & Finance Committee
FELLOWSHIP & HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE
Community building among members of the congregation:
Schedule and programs for family night suppers, special programs, picnics
Trips, outings, and other special events to offer opportunities for fellowship, learning, and fun as a community of faith
Congregational recreation
Fellowship Hour – “Lemonade on the Lawn”, “Meet and Greet”, etc.
Receptions for new members, special guests, or other special occasions
Hosting community or Presbytery groups and events
Special events for community, i.e. Christmas music, etc.
Report to Session with proposed dates
Prepare and present budget requests to the Budget & Finance Committee
Oversee ordinary maintenance of kitchen, including providing standards for cleanliness and fully stocking paper supplies.
MISSION & BENEVOLENCE COMMITTEE
Promote the mission program of the church
Identify community needs and support the Federal Point Help Center in cooperation with the Outreach & Evangelism committee.
Report and present annual special offerings schedule request to the Session.
With the pastor, provide for Minutes for Mission during worship services
Promote and publicize special offerings for missions
Continually reassess special offerings priorities
Advise session on emergency appeals for assistance
Suggest to the Session new, effective ways “to lead the congregation in participation in the mission of the whole Church in the world” (G-10.0102c)
MUSIC & WORSHIP COMMITTEE
Oversight of all worship matters, including:
Preparation of the sanctuary for worship, cleaning, setting up, decorating, special needs such as Advent Wreath and Chrismon Tree
Music Program
Special occasions for worship – i.e., Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Advent, Christmas, etc.
Observance of the Sacraments – Schedule and Preparation
Ushers and Junior Ushers
Pulpit Supply
Nursery Attendants
Report to Session, including use of worship facilities (i.e. weddings, etc.)
Prepare and present budget request to Budget & Finance Committee
OUTREACH & EVANGELISM COMMITTEE
Congregational Care : concern and care for members of the congregation, visitation within the congregation, with sick and shut-ins, and informing pastor of needs
Outreach & Evangelism : concern for newcomers, follow-up on visitors to worship services, visitation of prospective members, new members’ welcome and membership training, planning for evangelism
Community Care : care for the needy (physical) by identifying and addressing personal needs, and identify and address community needs in cooperation with the Mission & Benevolence committee.
